National Family History Week: 1-9 August, 2009

by Richard Offen
July 28th, 2009

Family HistoryHave you ever wondered about your family history? Where you came from? What your ancestors were like? Where they lived? Would you like to discover a little bit more about your family?

Researching family history has never been more popular, although it can sometimes be hard to know just where to start. If you are thinking about tracing you roots, then some of the events that are taking place during National Family History Week could be just the place to start.

From 1st to 9th August, there will be many events held Australia-wide to celebrate family history and family history research. Visit http://www.familyhistoryweek.org.au/ to find out what is happening in your area.

Here in Perth there will be an Open Day at the Western Australian Genealogical Society (WAGS) library at 48 May St Bayswater on Sunday 9th August. On that day you can find out more about the Society and have a look at their library. You will be amazed at the vast amount of information available from around the world and there will also be the opportunity to talk to people about family history in a friendly and informal atmosphere. For further information contact WAGS on 9271 4311 or visit their website at http://wags.org.au/o/

The State Library of Western Australia (SLWA) is also celebrating National Family History Week in conjunction with WAGS. The week will included something for everyone with events such as seminars for beginners, memories of the Bitz – London 1940, A basic introduction to genealogy software, Aboriginal records in Western Australia, tours of the library and much more. For further information including times of presentations visit the SLWA website www.slwa.wa.gov.au or phone 9427 3111.

HERITAGE PERTH ANNOUNCES “HERITAGE DAY”

by Richard Offen
July 24th, 2009

SUNDAY 15 NOVEMBER 2009

Heritage Perth is planning an event in November that will offer a distinctly different way to discover the fascinating history of Perth and the many fine heritage buildings that remain in the city centre.

The Heritage Perth Heritage Day will showcase the City’s cultural and built heritage by offering a broad range of heritage-based activities, providing visitors and residents of all ages and cultures with a unique opportunity to explore the fascinating history and heritage of Perth, including indigenous, historical, artistic, and cultural. The event is significant and important to our entire community as visitors will have free access to places and events that are not usually available to the public.

Heritage Perth Heritage Day will take place thanks to a grant from the City of Perth, to whom we are most grateful for their continued support.

Heritage Day will help to encourage a sense of community pride in the fine heritage buildings and historic sites of the city and demonstrate that exploring the history of Perth can be fun as well as an interesting pastime.
