A FREEE EVENT FOR NATIONAL ACHAEOLOGY WEEK 16 – 22 MAY

Ever wondered about past human societies? What artifacts, architecture, biofacts and environmental data from the past tell us? Well this month you may find the answer when Heritage Perth hosts an event in the Perth Town Hall for National Archaeology Week.

On Sunday 16 May, the foyer of the Town Hall will showcase an amazing display of pre-history, maritime and historical posters including Australian archaeological work overseas in Jordon and the Pilbara ARC and Cossak Projects. There will also be displays featuring the archaeology of Perth’s Government House, the Peel region, Manning Park Estate and the Archaeological Society of WA.

Look around and you might just see Governor James Stirling who can tell you about living in the First Government House and his thoughts about what Archaeologists will make of it in the future or try your hand as an archaeologist. Either by your self or as a family team of archaeologists, why not see if you can work your way through a series of activities using real artifacts and learn about the behaviours of people of the past.

The State Representative of the National Archaeology Week will give a talk at 3.30 pm and Ambika Flavel will tell us about her work as a Forensic Archaeologist including the excavation of soldiers at Fromelles. You can hear this fascinating talk at 4 pm

Investigate archaeology and take a look at the past on Sunday 16 May, Perth Town Hall from 2 – 4.30 pm. This is a FREE Heritage Perth event.

Council House Lights Up

by Richard Offen
April 9th, 2010

On Wednesday, 7th April, Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi threw a switch to illuminate Council House with coloured, energy efficient LED lighting.

Council House is the first of six city sites to be illuminated under a plan from the City of Perth to make the city brighter and more attractive after hours.

Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said that Council House was an appropriate building to start with, given its prominent inner City location and intricate and well recognised façade. “Council House is now a heritage listed building and we are very proud to be showing it in a new light,” Ms Scaffidi said.

In order to achieve a façade lighting scheme whose design can be changed at the tap of a computer keyboard, over 20,000 diodes have been installed on the famous structural ‘Ts’ of Council House. Using such equipment, makes it possible to light a building using a fraction of the energy previously required for the same purpose.

“This project will do much for our city by way of enhancing its attractiveness, safety and bringing a sense of colour to our streets. This is an exciting initiative and one that I hope will inspire private property developers to consider more illumination to their buildings,” the Lord Mayor said.

Heritage Perth is proud to have been associated with the new Council House lights by providing the City of Perth with its ‘Light Up the City’ lighting specification which was used as one of the design guides for the project.

Developed for Heritage Perth by leaders in the field of lighting technology, the specification can give up to 500% efficiencies over conventional façade lighting systems when used to guide a lighting design.

“Our lighting design specification has been developed to inform individual schemes, ensuring a consistency of approach and minimal environmental impact.” Explained Richard Offen, Executive Director of Heritage Perth.
