A Heritage Performance by St George’s Cathedral Consort

by Richard Offen
April 2nd, 2012

St Georges Cathedral has launched their 2012 Concert series and over the next twelve months you have the opportunity to hear some sensational performances by the critically acclaimed St George’s Cathedral Consort. Described as ‘elite and faultless’ by Australian media, under the expert direction of Joseph Nolan, they can now be truly called world-class’

Founded In 2008 by Nolan, the Cathedral’s Organist and Master of Choristers, the St George’s Consort is a professional choir of up to 18 singers.

The second concert in this year’s series, on Friday 27 April, is ‘Lux Aeterna’ presented in association with Heritage Perth. This anthology of choral works by Morten Lauridsen is an exceptional piece that will be conducted by Joseph Nolan and feature organist Stewart Smith.

A classic new American choral writing that premiered in Los Angeles in 1997, ‘Lux Aeterna’ is a light-filled continuum of sacred texts, old world structures and new world spirit intertwined in hope. It is a beautifully written score that evokes a generosity of spirit and reminds us to expect the unexpected.

This concert will be matchless in its presentation, providing a journey for the audience’s eyes as well as their ears. In another ‘first’ for the Cathedral, Heritage Perth will provide a visual accompaniment that will be screened with the performance of ‘Lux Aeterna’. The visual journey will follow the light, shade and darkness of the music through the City of Perth’s heritage. See buildings you may not have thought about for a while, maybe never seen, or never seen like this before.

Discover the already discovered with the St George’s Cathedral Consort ‘Lux Aeterna’ in collaboration with Heritage Perth, Friday 27 April, 7.30pm, St George’s Cathedral. Tickets are available from Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.com.au

Australian Heritage Week 14 – 22 April 2012

by Richard Offen
April 2nd, 2012

Australian National Heritage Week is an annual celebration of Australia’s unique heritage. It provides an opportunity for people across this vast nation to reflect on the stories and places that created their part of Australia’s heritage. There will be over 300 events held across the week with communities in each state and territory involved.

In the West, Heritage Perth in conjunction with St George’s Cathedral will be presenting a talk by internationally renowned stained glass artisan, Kim Fitzpatrick from Tradition Stained Glass. The presentation will focus on “The beauty of Glass” and how you can draw upon the past to create a more beautiful future.

The talk is FREE and will be held on Thursday 19 April, 6.30pm to 8.00pm at St George’s Cathedral, St George’s Terrace, Perth.

In addition to the talk, Heritage Perth Executive Director Richard Offen will also conduct two lunchtime ‘Look Up Perth’ guided walks in the city centre, both lasting about 50 minutes. The first walk is Tuesday 17 April and will take you on a tour of some of the historic buildings in Hay Street Mall. The second walk is Friday 20 April and will showcase some of the oldest standing buildings in Perth including the Old Court House. For both walks, meet at the Town Hall at 12.30pm. Booking is essential as numbers are limited. To book, click here.

Heritage Perth Welcomes its New Patron

by Richard Offen
April 2nd, 2012

Heritage Perth is an incorporated association whose members form a voluntary independent board representing a range of organisations and groups. Leading this group of dedicated people is our Patron. For the last six years Dr Ken Michael AC was our Patron as Governor of Western Australia. The Executive Director and Board of Heritage Perth thank Dr Michael for his years of service as an honoured guardian, protector and supporter of Perth’s heritage.

We are extremely pleased that His Excellency Mr Malcolm McCusker AO QC, Governor of Western Australia has accepted the invitation as the new Patron of Heritage Perth.

On 1 July 2011, Malcolm James McCusker became the 31st Governor of Western Australia. Born and educated in North Perth, the young Malcolm also studied at Lenah Valley Primary Schools, Hobart High School and Perth Modern School.

In 1961 he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Western Australia and was admitted to practice. As a barrister, he has appeared in the WA Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, Federal Court, High Court, and Privy Council. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1982. Mr McCusker is well known for his successful representation in a number of high profile cases, often pro bono, of wrongfully convicted persons.

In conjunction with his legal practice, for many years he was a part-time lecturer at the University of Western Australia in the Faculties of Law and Commerce. He served as Chairman of the Legal Aid Commission of WA from 1983 to 2011 (the longest-serving of any Commissioner in Australia).

Among the many acknowledgements of his work within the community, Mr McCusker was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for his services to law and the community in 2005 and a Companion of the Order for service to the people of Western Australia in 2012. This award particularly recognised his provision of access to legal support, also his support for sustainable development and education and philanthropy for a wide range of causes.

On accepting the position of Patron of Heritage Perth, Mr McCusker said “Preserving Perth’s irreplaceable historic buildings and historic sites is vitally important, not only for the people of Perth, but also the State of Western Australia. Conservation ensures that our links with the past, our history, are preserved for future generations to appreciate.

Working in Partnership with key organisations, Heritage Perth is cultivating a culture where heritage paces are respected, conserved and maintained, by a well informed and concerned community which values heritage for its contribution to Perth’s sense of place and sense of history.”

We look forward to working with our new Patron and sharing both his and our enthusiasm for heritage.
