Victoria Watts has won the Etihad Airways Heritage Prize in this year’s Black Swan Prize for Heritage. Last night saw her awarded $20,000 for her artwork ‘Modernistic Icon’, a representation of Perth’s iconic Council House building, at the Awards night held at Brookfield Place. This year, the judges commented the diversity of styles and mediums employed in interpreting the Heritage theme and were impressed with the thought processes behind many of the artworks submitted. The judges all agreed that Victoria had managed to execute her winning piece with great expertise. With a colour palette that is distinctive to Perth, it was felt that the clear blue skies contrasted effortlessly with the modernist architecture. High commended prizes went to Christopher Young for his untitled artwork , Mark de Cruz for “Purgatorium†, Claire Bridge for “RPH: The Beating Heart of Perth†and Ron Nyisztor for his piece entitled Lat 31 57 08 Long 115 51 32 (2).
The public were also invited to participate in the popular People’s Choice Prize, with the opportunity to win a $200 gift voucher from the Fig Café. The votes determining the $7,500 price, proudly sponsored by MLV Realestate, declared ‘Trinity Arcade’, by Jacqui Grantford the winner of the People’s Choice. The Black Swan Prize for Heritage would not be possible without the generosity of our major sponsors:, Etihad Airways, Heritage Perth, MLV Real Estate, and Atlas Iron.
