On Wednesday, 7th April, Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi threw a switch to illuminate Council House with coloured, energy efficient LED lighting.

Council House is the first of six city sites to be illuminated under a plan from the City of Perth to make the city brighter and more attractive after hours.

Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said that Council House was an appropriate building to start with, given its prominent inner City location and intricate and well recognised façade. “Council House is now a heritage listed building and we are very proud to be showing it in a new light,” Ms Scaffidi said.

In order to achieve a façade lighting scheme whose design can be changed at the tap of a computer keyboard, over 20,000 diodes have been installed on the famous structural ‘Ts’ of Council House. Using such equipment, makes it possible to light a building using a fraction of the energy previously required for the same purpose.

“This project will do much for our city by way of enhancing its attractiveness, safety and bringing a sense of colour to our streets. This is an exciting initiative and one that I hope will inspire private property developers to consider more illumination to their buildings,” the Lord Mayor said.

Heritage Perth is proud to have been associated with the new Council House lights by providing the City of Perth with its ‘Light Up the City’ lighting specification which was used as one of the design guides for the project.

Developed for Heritage Perth by leaders in the field of lighting technology, the specification can give up to 500% efficiencies over conventional façade lighting systems when used to guide a lighting design.

“Our lighting design specification has been developed to inform individual schemes, ensuring a consistency of approach and minimal environmental impact.” Explained Richard Offen, Executive Director of Heritage Perth.
